Seaton Grantland (1782-1864) was born in New Kent, Virginia, the son of Gideon and Sallie Bradford Gantland. In 1808, he moved to Milledgeville, Georgia. His brother, Fleming Grantland, soon followed and the two men established the Georgia Journal. After Fleming's death in 1819 at the age of 29, Seaton sold the paper.
